Shin-Sabi.

A philosophy of matter, interval and action. The piece does not end with its form: it is completed through the relationship with the person who inhabits it.

The origin:
from looking to activating.

A response to the passive object.

Shin-Sabi begins as a way of thinking about the relationship between matter, space and attention through action.

It does not seek to turn imperfection into decoration or repeat a familiar aesthetic. It introduces gesture, use and interaction so the work can change with the person who activates it.

Matter, interval and gesture.

Shin-Sabi is a framework for designing pieces that are understood not only through their form, but also through what happens around and through them.

01

Ma

The interval, the void and the space between things. Not as absence, but as a condition that allows perception to pause and reorganise.

02

Sumika

The crack as an inhabited place. It is neither hidden nor corrected: it becomes an area where matter concentrates relationship, trace and presence.

03

Gesture

Touching, orienting, lighting, containing water or scent. The user’s action completes the work and changes its relationship with the space.

The work does not end with its form.

The volume establishes a material presence. The experience emerges when someone enters into a relationship with it.

Fire, water, scent, light, rotation or touch are not added afterwards as decorative devices. They are part of the way the piece can be inhabited.

Not repair.
Inhabit.

In Shin-Sabi, the crack is not presented as a wound that needs to disappear. It becomes a place of attention within the piece.

Matter + trace

Texture, weight, marks and variations remain visible. The material retains its history without turning it into a flaw that needs correcting.

Crack + relationship

Copper, patina or metallic leaf can occupy that interval. The crack stops being a broken edge and becomes an active part of how the work is read.

Shin-Sabi within 53 Design Lab.

Shin-Sabi does not operate as a theory separate from the work. It is the framework connecting form, matter, activation and presence.

At 53 Design Lab, each piece is designed to have a clear physical presence while opening a possibility of relationship: with the body, the space and the present moment.

The work is completed through relationship.
